What Counts as a Dental Emergency?

Many dental problems should be treated quickly to relieve pain, prevent infection, and avoid permanent damage to your teeth and gums.

Common dental emergencies include:

  • Severe toothaches or dental pain
  • Knocked-out teeth
  • Broken, chipped, or cracked teeth
  • Dental abscesses or swelling
  • Lost fillings or crowns
  • Bleeding that will not stop
  • Gum or jaw infections
  • Dental trauma from sports or accidents
  • Pain when biting or chewing
  • Facial swelling

If you are unsure whether your situation is an emergency, contact our office and we will help determine the best course of action.

Emergency Dental Services We Provide

Persistent or severe tooth pain may indicate infection, decay, nerve damage, or a cracked tooth. We use advanced diagnostic imaging to identify the cause and provide targeted treatment, which may include root canal therapy, antibiotic treatment, or extraction with replacement options.

Until you are seen:

  • Apply a cold compress for 10–20 minutes at a time
  • Avoid chewing on the painful side
  • Use over-the-counter pain medication as directed
  • Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gums

Even small cracks can worsen over time and lead to infection or tooth loss if left untreated. We provide prompt evaluation and treatment for chipped, fractured, or broken teeth.

If possible:

  • Save any broken pieces
  • Rinse your mouth gently with warm water
  • Avoid chewing on the damaged tooth
  • Contact us immediately

A knocked-out tooth requires immediate attention and should ideally be treated within 30 to 60 minutes for the best chance of saving the tooth.

Important steps:

  • Handle the tooth by the crown, not the root
  • Gently rinse with water if dirty
  • Keep the tooth moist in milk or saliva
  • Seek emergency dental care immediately

Losing a crown or filling can expose sensitive tooth structure and lead to discomfort or additional damage.

In some cases, a crown can temporarily be placed back onto the tooth using toothpaste, Vaseline, or over-the-counter dental cement until you can be seen. Contact our office as soon as possible so we can determine whether you need immediate treatment.

Swelling, gum infections, or abscesses should never be ignored. Dental infections can spread quickly and may become serious if left untreated.

Symptoms may include:

  • Facial swelling
  • Severe throbbing pain
  • Fever
  • Bad taste in the mouth
  • Swollen gums
  • Difficulty chewing

If you are experiencing significant swelling, difficulty breathing, or difficulty swallowing, seek immediate medical attention.
