What to do if you have a dental emergency

Accidents can happen anytime, but it often seems like they happen at night when the help you need is not available!

Things you should have in a home emergency kit that may be needed for a dental emergency:

  1. Rubber exam gloves – If you have any bleeding in the mouth you should wear gloves to avoid introducing potentially dangerous bacteria. At the very least, you should wash your hands with soap and water prior to touching your mouth.
  2. Save-A-Tooth system – This is simply a saline solution that is compatible with our bodily fluids. It is the best way to keep a tooth “alive” when it is knocked out and not immediately re-implanted.  It is important to remember that a tooth can only be outside of its socket for a few hours before the probability of successful re-implantion starts to go down-hill fast.
  3. Temporary Crown and Filling Material – These materials can help temporarily fix a broken or dislodged crown or filling while you make plans to visit us at Del Sur Dentistry. These products can be found at your local pharmacy.
  4. Dental wax – Wax can be used to cover the jagged ends of a broken tooth or filling and help prevent damage to your tongue and/or gums. Wax can also be used to help hold a crown in place until you can have it re-cemented at our office.
  5. Sterile Gauze
  6. Dental Floss and Toothbrush
  7. Ice Pack
  8. Pain Medication – Over the counter pain medication, such as Ibuprofen and Acetaminophen can help relieve oral pain, but should only be taken as directed.

You can purchase complete dental first aid kits on Amazon.
